A woman returns to her small southern hometown in the wake of her mother’s sudden death—only to find the past upended by stunning family secrets—in this intimate debut novel, written with deep compassion and sharp wit. “A deeply moving work of Southern fiction that will appeal to fans of Where the Crawdads Sing . . . a story to remember long after the last page is turned.”—Susan Wiggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Lost and Found Bookshop Lila Bruce Breedlove never quite felt at home in Wesleyan, Georgia, especially after her father’s untimely demise when she was a child. Both Lila and her brother, Henry, fled north after high school, establishing fulfilling lives of their own. In contrast, their younger sister, Abigail, opted to remain behind to dote on their domineering, larger-than-life mother, Geneva. Yet despite their independence, Lila and Henry know deep down that they’ve never quite reckoned with their upbringing. When their elderly mother dies suddenly and suspiciously in the muscadine arbor behind the family estate, Lila and Henry return to the town that essentially raised them. But as they uncover the facts about Geneva’s death, shocking truths are revealed that overturn the family’s history as they know it, sending the pair on an extraordinary journey to chase a truth that will dramatically alter the course of their lives. The Sweet Taste of Muscadines reminds us all that true love never dies.

Book The Sweet Taste of Muscadines: A Novel Review :

I came on to read reviews and am astonished at the 5 star ones but I know to each their own so...I have a hard time sitting and reading this book for a couple of reasons...the writer tries so hard to be elaborate in descriptions and thoughts...so much to the point where these things are strung into very long boring sentences. Second...I don't believe for a minute that Ms. Terry was born in the South and I don't believe she lived in the south for an extended time growing up...all of her reviews quote the same "lifelong southerner". She tries far too hard to sound southern...sweet iced tea...any southerner knows you say sweet tea...the "iced" is implied. And her constantly referring to "southern"...southern funeral, southern boy haircut...etc. She also seems to have disdain for the south in many ways in her descriptions. Characters...I am only continuing to try to read this book because I like Henry and am curious as to why their mother was in the arbor. None of the characters are very dimensional but there is a likeability with Henry. Overall...if you can check this book out rather than pay for it..I would suggest that. As of right now...I don't recommend it. It is slow, pointless so far and the characters are not dimensional enough for a reader to be interested...or at least for this reader.
This was the most poorly written novel I've read in years and I was deeply disappointed. The premise was there and I was elated to finally see a gay character normalized in a piece of southern fiction. But, the writing. My God it was atrocious. It was as if a teenager got a hold of a thesaurus for the first time and just started picking words to place to paper. So flowery and pages and pages of unnecessary fluff. For example there was an entire chapter dedicated to describing a breakfast and absolutely nothing happened in regards to the plot, it was just adjective after adjective describing food! Utterly ridiculous. Whatever reviewers compared this to Where the Crawdads Sing should be ashamed of themselves, and they should also cover the refunds. If you must delve into this I suggest reserving for free from a local library.
